Write where the effect comes from, how it travels, what happens when it hits the subject, and how it ends.
Particles, breakage, energy, weather, and magic are easier to control when you write them as a cause chain: source, material, path, interaction with the subject, and how the effect dissipates or lands. If the effect tends to steal the shot, lock the camera first so the change stays readable.
